SRV GROUP PLC PRESS RELEASE 24 JANUARY 2019, 18:00 PM
Tampere Deck showcases itself at the new Visit Center
Tampere Deck—a new area that uniquely combines leisure experiences, services and housing—is being built in the heart of Tampere. The large-scale project is being carried out by a growing group of services, sports, entertainment, business and construction professionals. The Tampere Deck Visit Center was opened near the construction site today. The impressive scale model in front of the center offers a glimpse into the future. The Visit Center will hold an open day on Saturday, 26 January, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Tampere Deck Visit Center, located at the old and atmospheric railway depot next to Hotel Torni, offers Tampere residents and others interested in the project a chance to learn more about it. At the Visit Center, you will have the chance to get to know the participants and partners of the Tampere Deck project.
“The arena, which will be the first building to be completed in the area, will be a world-class centre for live entertainment experiences and the starting point for a new and outstanding district of Tampere. Tampere Deck connects the east and west sides of the city and brings together leisure experiences, housing, jobs and sports in a way that is truly unique. The Visit Center offers a great opportunity to learn about our new landmark in advance and get a taste of what is to come,” says Lauri Lyly, the mayor of Tampere.
The Visit Center of Tampere Deck will organise partner meetings and presentation events as well as offer experiences and hold visitor days. Tampere residents will have the chance to get to know the centre on Saturday, 26 January, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when the Visit Center holds an open day.
”The Visit Center is the window into the new area and its events, arena and apartments, and the center will change to keep up with the development of the new area throughout the course of the project,” says Tero Tenhunen, Project Director at the City of Tampere.
Top architectural design in the form of an impressive scale model
You can get a look at the entire Tampere Deck area and its finished look in front of the Visit Center, where an impressive scale model of the upcoming area has been built. Over 15 metres wide and seven metres tall, the steel scale model of the Tampere Deck area is something that has never before been seen in all of Finland.
“The large, light-coloured model and its changing lighting showcase the impressiveness and special characteristics of the area’s architectural design. The design language of the top architect Daniel Libeskind and the placing of the buildings form a harmonious whole that updates the silhouette of the entire city,” says Kari Mäkelä, Director, Project Development at SRV.
The first city centre arena in Europe
The first phase of the Tampere Deck project will be completed in less than three years, when the construction of the new arena—large enough to match many major arenas outside Finland—will be finished in 2021. The Tampere Deck Arena will be the first centre for leisure experiences to be constructed right in the heart of a European city.
The Arena’s domestic and international sports, entertainment and congress venue selection will be complemented by a hotel by Lapland Hotels, a Veikkaus casino and various kinds of restaurant services offered by NoHo Partners and Hartwall, to name just a few. In addition, the home games of Tappara and Ilves will form an important part of the events selection. Lippupiste will be in charge of ticket sales for all events.
According to Project Director Tero Tenhunen, the important partnerships that have already been established by the arena are a sign of the attractiveness of the entire area and its concept. “The roughly EUR 550 million Tampere Deck project will have a significant impact on the regional economy both during the construction phase and after the construction has been completed. Tampere Deck and Arena will mark the beginning of a new era of leisure experiences in Finland.”

The new Tampere Deck and Arena project will connect the east and west sides of Tampere. The area will form a new type of hybrid block with residential buildings, jobs and the largest sports and events arena in Finland, with a seating capacity of around 13,000–15,000. The local ice hockey teams Tappara and Ilves will play their home matches at the new arena starting from the 2021–2022 season. The first phase will comprise the construction of a deck on the south railway yard. The arena, a training facility, a hotel and two tower blocks will be built on the deck. The second stage includes the north deck and three tower blocks. According to estimates, the area will contain a total of around 1,000 apartments.
