SRV will build the Woodspin fibre mill in Eteläportti, Jyväskylä

SRV and Jykia, a municipally-owned property development company, have signed a contract agreement on the implementation of a fibre mill in Eteläportti, Jyväskylä. The project is valued at a total of about EUR 50 million, of which the project management contract accounts for around EUR 16 million. The project will be recognised in SRV’s order backlog for August. Construction work will begin in autumn 2021. The factory facilities will be completed at the end of 2022.

Jykia is developing the mill for Woodspin Oy, the joint venture of the materials innovation company Spinnova and the pulp company Suzano. The mill will be built in the developing Eteläportti industrial area, located in the southern part of Jyväskylä. It will produce fibre from cellulose for the needs of the textile industry. Suzano Finland Oy’s MFC facility and Spinnova’s product development department and headquarters will also be based in the same property.

The property will have a floor area of about 11,500 m², with production halls measuring around 9,500 m² and offices and laboratories approximately 2,000 m². Preconstruction has been carried out on the plot during the summer. SRV will start foundation works at the beginning of September. The installation of the prefabricated frame will begin at the turn of September and October.

“We’re delighted and proud to implement this new fibre mill in Jyväskylä. The project is an excellent fit with our new strategy – the project emphasises lifecycle-wise energy solutions,” says Henri Sulankivi, Senior Vice President, Regional Units.

The mill will produce SPINNOVA® fibre – an ecological fibre made without dissolving or harmful chemicals. Sustainable energy solutions are in a key role in the construction of the new mill.

“This will be an exceptionally clean and energy-efficient facility. It will run on renewable energy and recovered thermal energy – and it will generate energy back into the district heating network. Water steam is the only side stream of our process, and most of it is cycled back into the process,” says Janne Poranen, CEO and cofounder of Spinnova.

“Even in the tender stage, it was obvious that the demanding nature and tight schedule of the project pose greater challenges than usual. We received plenty of offers and selected SRV as the prime contractor. Project scheduling is now extremely important. The professional skills and cooperation between all project personnel play a decisive role. The project will also strengthen the development of the new Eteläportti area and will create a substantial number of jobs there,” says Seija Takanen, CEO of Jykia.
