SRV to renovate historically important Lahti City Hall as an alliance project

SRV and  Lahti Premises Department have signed a contract for the renovation and modernisation of Lahti City Hall. The cost estimate for the alliance project is EUR 18.6 million. The project will be launched immediately with a one-year development phase, after which the project will be transferred to SRV’s order backlog.

The parties to the alliance are SRV for the implementation, and three architect firms – Davidsson Tarkela Oy, Granlund Oy and Ideastructura Oy – for the design and engineering. The development phase will be used to plan the project and carry out preparatory work. Construction will start in summer 2021 and the building is estimated to be ready for use in spring 2023.

“The property is in a prime location in Lahti – we will modernise it while respecting the building’s historical origins. Lahti City Hall is a historically and architecturally important building, which also has value with regard to the cityscape. We have previously carried out demanding renovations at many historical properties, such as Tiedekulma (Think Corner) and the Kaisa Building for the University of Helsinki, Brondankulma, and the Helsinki City Theatre,” says Antti Raunemaa, Unit Director, SRV.

The total area of the renovated building is 3,930 m2. The building has four floors, with the lowest floor being partly below ground level and the top floor extending into the attic space. The aim of the renovation is to bring the technical building systems up to date and transform the premises to meet the current space needs and functional requirements. The renovation will be carried out by preserving the building’s historical elements representing different eras while improving the functionality of the building and making it more comfortable and accessible, so that the building can be used more actively by the city’s residents in everyday life.

“Lahden Tilakeskus chose to implement this renovation of the city’s landmark of great architectural value as an alliance project because it enables pooling the resources of designers, implementers and the client in a way that will help achieve the best possible outcome in the project both in terms of quality and cost-effectiveness,” says Sari Honkanen, Project manager, Lahti Premises Department.

Designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1912, Lahti City Hall was and is a truly multipurpose space, housing many functions related to the city's governance and development. The building stands at the other end of the city’s ceremonial axis of Mariankatu street, which is on the list of cultural environments of regional importance and the list of built cultural environments of national importance. The last remaining original function is the council hall, which serves as the setting for the City Council and City Board's meetings as it has done throughout the building’s 107-year history.
