SRV to implement new facilities of the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages in Myllypuro as a lifecycle project
SRV and the City of Helsinki have signed an agreement to implement the new building of the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages in Myllypuro by utilising the life cycle approach. The total value of the agreement, taking into account the life cycle services, is approximately EUR 38 million. The project will be recognised in SRV's order backlog for December 2020.
The new build will rise next to the Myllypuro metro station on the plot of the current service station, and will have facilities for approximately 900 upper secondary school students. The new building will replace the old premises of the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages in the Itäkeskus area. In the evenings, a high school for adults will operate in the same building with the school. In addition, the building will house leisure and sports facilities for the use of city residents. The new building will be built along accessible transport connections, and it will form a campus area with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and the Helsinki Vocational College currently under construction.
The scale of the four-storey building will be approximately 8,000 gross square metres. Project planning will start immediately and construction will begin with earthworks in early 2021. The new Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages will be completed in spring 2023, and students will be able to start using their new premises in the autumn term of 2023. The project will be carried out as a life cycle contract, in which SRV is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance and servicing of the new property for the first 20 years.
“We are pleased to start the implementation of the new school building with the City of Helsinki by utilising a life cycle approach. The life cycle model enables the City of Helsinki to provide services and high-quality teaching to city residents when the construction and maintenance of the property is carried out by a single operator. Currently we are also implementing lifecycle projects in Siuntio and Kirkkonummi, where the Jokirinne Learning Center for 1,100 students will be completed by the end of this year,” says Saku Kosonen, the Unit Director at SRV in charge of the project.
The objectives of the Carbon-neutral Helsinki 2035 action plan are implemented in the design and material selections of the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages. The choices of the design solution have focused on energy efficiency measures and local, renewable energy production with heat pumps and solar panels. The building will benefit from a hybrid energy production solution which will combine district heating and air-water heat pump technology.
Lahdelma & Mahlamäki architects is responsible for the school's architectural designs, and the agency has also designed the adjacent Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The facilities have been designed together with the school staff, and further planning will also involve the staff and students of the upper secondary school.
“The space arrangements will enable the implementation of multidisciplinary goals to support well-being and provide focus on collaboration pursuant to the upper secondary school’s renewed curriculum. The Upper Secondary School of Languages is already in the process of considering new pedagogical solutions so that the new school building can be used in an efficient manner worthy of its purpose as soon as it is completed,” explains Sanna Manner, Principal of the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages.
